Twenty-one GONADS, people. Twenty-one.
That's insane.
Last fall and into the winter, the SweetSix was a 4- to 6-man affair. One morning last fall, it was just me and Dredd.
Gamucci used to be like that too, but I figured the SweetSix would never become all that popular simply because rolling out of bed before 5 a.m., lacing the shoes up and committing to run a fast 10K (and then some) on a challenging, hilly course -- well, that's tough. As I've told several people, this is the one workout that I consistently come closest to fartsacking each week, mainly because each week I know that I will be challenged to run into and through the pain of forcing myself to run fast and hard. The SweetSix scares me and has no mercy. So 3xclaps to all who posted.
The Pax:
Angrus the Angry Scotsman
Nino/Boy Marlo
MacDeuce
CP/Affirmation Jones
MMOB
The Colonel (BHWTU)
Dredd
PBo
RedWarrior
OBT
Uptown Freddy Brown
DarkWarrior
Moniteur
OakTree
SixMike
Oxburger
BlackBird (SweetSix FNG)
Mizer
Holtz
Hitman
Waco
The Thang:
The MMOB City Loop, through heart of the Queen City and back down the Morehead RollerCoaster to Christ Church, 6.4 miles.
The Times:
The lead pack, which included Angrus, CP, Nino and MacDeuce, was in just over 45:00.
A chase pack of Dredd, The Colonel (BHWTU) and MMOB trailed them by maybe a a minute or two. (?)
The peloton was strung out this morning. I was about 20-30 seconds behind PBo and Red Warrior (my time was 49:05); then it was a little ways back to DW, Uptown Fred, Moniteur and his sidekick OakTree, then BlackBird, Oxburger, SixMike, Holtz, Mizer, Hitman and Waco.
Spreadsheets from the Gloom:
_ Hitman, surveying the front-of-the-pack talent assembled at 0514, just before the start: "Wow ... speed merchants. This looks like the start of a Charlotte road race."
_ Man Down! was yours truly, tripping as I tried to dodge oncoming traffic and get onto the sidewalk on Morehead/Queens just past the Kings intersection. Another week, another layer of knee skin lost to the Gloomy Sidewalks of Charlotte.
_ No jams this week for MMOB (glad to see the laundry getting done in the Peacock home), but it was nice to see the ChickenHat Visor holding the Hair Volcano in place. A Kotter to the ChickenHat Visor.
_ 3xclaps to SweetSix FNG BlackBird, who showed nicely in his City Loop debut. Also a Kotter to Moniteur's Raleigh colleague OakTree, who left the RedSoxNation gear behind this time but still hit the pace nicely. And 3xclaps to PBo and MMOB, who seem to have worked a few things out -- neither required a Kangaroo or Dowd Y ScrodStop this AM.
_ REMINDER: Just to repeat what I said after the run: All GONADS are invited to Ed's Tavern in Dilworth next Wednesday evening at 6:30 for a Blue Ridge Relay planning meeting. It looks like we have all 12 GONADS back from last year's team but there's strong interest from others and we'll be taking steps to figure out what a second and potentially third teams might look like. The BRR is a 208-mile, 36-stage relay run through the day and night of Friday, September 9th, and Saturday, September 10th. Teams travel in vans along the route from Grayson Highlands, Va., to downtown Asheville, N.C.; on a 12-man team (the largest allowed), each runner will run 3 of the 36 legs. The race takes anywhere from 26-32 hours total. It's a great team event, with the camaraderie and fellowship as worthwhile as the athletic challenge of some of the relay legs, which are rated from "Easy" to "Mountain Goat Hard." If you are interested and are not yet on my invitation list, please consider this your invitation and come on out next Wednesday. If you're interested and can't make it next Wednesday, please shoot me an email so I know you're in.
